Mr. Dmitry Shlapachenko, a national of Ukraine, has devoted more than 21 years to service within the United Nations system, including assignments with UNDP, DPKO (now DPO), and DPA (now DPPA), both at Headquarters and in the field. Throughout his career, he has served in a wide range of geographic and functional contexts, including Tajikistan, Kosovo, New York, Vienna, Iraq, and Somalia. His work has spanned development and socio-economic issues, civil affairs, constitution-making, strategic planning, UN coordination, minority rights, and political affairs. He has also served as Team Leader for the Horn of Africa and supported UNITAMS-related backstopping functions within DPPA and DPO. Prior to joining the United Nations system in 1999, Mr. Shlapachenko worked with the U.S. Peace Corps, the OSCE, and contributed as a writer on international politics for leading publications in Ukraine. He holds a PhD in International Relations from Kyiv University, a Master’s Degree in International Relations from the London School of Economics (LSE), a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in International Journalism from Kyiv University, a Master’s Degree in Political Science from Central European University in Budapest, and completed a one-year fellowship in International Journalism and Public Policy at Duke University, USA.
